Carson’s death came three weeks after she announced she had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and followed years of health troubles. She said days later that she would not run next year for a seventh call representing the district that covers most of Indianapolis. “Today we honor the extraordinary life of Julia Carson and Michelle and I furnish our thoughts and prayers to her family friends and constituents. Congresswoman Carson was a trailblazer and an inspiration as the first African-American and first woman to represent Indianapolis in the Congress. Her principled advocacy for civil rights women’s rights children’s health care and economic opportunity made an enormous impact on her district her state and her country. She was not only a friend and a colleague but a kindred spirit in the fight for equality and justice. The give that she generously offered me over these last few years as well as her dignity good gratify and faith will never be forgotten.” <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <have in mind> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

Rep. Julia Carson (D-IN) less than a month after that she had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and would not be running again. The diagnosis was made over this past pass. Carson was 69 serving her sixth term and was both the first African-American and the first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress. I'm sorry to hear of her passing. It's never nice to hear of this sort of thing especially when someone loses the battle against an egregious disease desire cancer. My take is that it will very likely be a very competitive election to regenerate here. Here are the Carson win margin results over the past 3 elections: Here is the margin that John Kerry won the district by in 2004: 58%-42%. That more accurately reflects the partisan nature of the district. demwinger wrote on December 16. 2007 7:44 AM: sorry to hear this. she was a good congresswoman.. she got a lot of grief for being an african american women in a liberal white district but always came out on top. many times polls had her down but she would displace out a win anyway. and to steve.. absolutely not this is a safe seat for a capable democrat to win. Carson wasn't your run of the mill white midwestern write so had trouble winning

"The Life of Rep. Julia Carson Remembered" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 20:40:02

Carson is remembered as a career public servant who operated without the self-promotion most politicians employ. 24-Hour News 8 received a number of statements from politicians offering their condolences and sharing memories of Julia Carson. Carson is remembered for the care she gave others like former state representative Mae Dickinson who remembers encouragement that included a campaign contribution when she had no chance of winning an election. "It's a sad day because she's been such an advocate for people those who feel they have no voice. She was their express," said Dickinson. People desire the victims of domestic violence. Mayor Bart Peterson hailed Carson's bring home the bacon in that area but talked about her attitude. "She treated everybody equally from the highest aim corporate CEO to the person at the lowest end of the economic spectrum she treated everybody the same and I think that's part of why she was so beloved," said Mayor Peterson. Party leaders including Marion County Democratic Chairman Mike O'Connor undergo political concerns but want to remember Julia first. "It's certainly the passing of somebody who has. I think legendary status somebody who was a friend to an awful lot of people and was the copy of what a public servant should be," said O'Connor. Maybe no one said it exceed than Andy Jacobs the man who preceeded Representative Carson in Congress. "My care used to say the go that blew the whistle never turned the wheel. Julia was a go around turner," said Jacobs. Governor Mitch Daniels will label a special election likely in February or March to choose Rep. Carson's replacement. "Julia Carson was honest defy tireless in causes she believed in But she was also pure of heart. And she had the heart of a servant. It was genuine conviction in Julia but it was never meanness. And she was so much fun. It was rare to leave her presence without a grimace. After the sadness fades a bit we'll always have that. I experience I'll always evaluate of her often and always with a smile," said Governor Daniels.

"The Last Day, ?Trusting the Journey? and Things to Come" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 21:41:13

As ever I awoke to do my exercises rushed to breakfast and stole a few minutes before my first meeting to sit down at this computer and try (desperately but always unsuccessfully) to catch up on my blogging.  This was to be the last day of my move and it looked desire it would be typical; a variety of meetings thanks to a entertain of different sources on an array of topics.  alter at the end things did not go as planned and took off in an unexpected direction but this was very much in keeping with the animate of the move.  A friend of mine called Peter Tyson urged me to just let things happen this way—“believe the jaunt” he would say.  A very sensible bit of advice—and when I followed it. I was never disappointed. At 11:00 I met with Helen Tanner who is Head of the Commercial section of the British Embassy in Zagreb. Croatia.  This is one of the three main activities of the Embassy.  The other two are the operational bit (visas passports etc.) and the political bit (military intelligence and other bits also reside in this unit).  Helen joined the DTI about 8 years ago and was then posted to Trinidad which she informed me was a large energy exporter—news to me.  Just over a year ago she came to Zagreb and she ordain be in affix for a few more years.  I enjoyed Helen’s overall insights and our verbal journey of social business in the country.   a friend of Majda Tafra-Vlahovic the woman doing CSR at Coca-Cola who I met in July in Zagreb.  Paul is fascinating.  He was a teacher in Bradford in the UK and was absolutely miserable.  So when the war struck in the former Yugoslavia Paul came “to do something” and worked for an NGO called “Suncokret” (Bosnian for Sunflower) helping refugees in the region.  He then received a small give from Sheffield (see communicate post on CITY Learning in Thessaloniki) to do some academic work on social policy and commenced a three-part life; academic work anti-war activity and some informal consulting.  Eventually he fell in love both with the region and with the woman who became his wife (Jasmina) and they and their two kids be in Zagreb.  Paul eventually moved to the initiate of Economics in Zagreb and became their resident sociologist.  His ongoing bring home the bacon in academia and consulting covers sustainability. CSR social policy and a be of new and interesting questions—for Croatia the region and the rest of the world.  (OK the schedule is not too demanding by City/Wall Street standards but this is the Balkans after all!!) who is Head of Treasury and Liability Management for VIPnet a subsidiary of a large Austrian mobile telecommunicate company (MobilKom).  I agreed with her that most of our conversation would be off the record but nevertheless appreciated her very helpful insights into the financial and fiscal situation in Croatia and the state of development of the capital markets.  Quite a large percentage of what I was told by many of those I met was done off the record and I genuinely appreciated these sensitive insights and the underlying confidence of those who shared them.  She also explained some of the important CSR work her affiliate has undertaken with deaf and blind people in the region.      At 19:00 I planned to meet Marta Cerovecki for dinner.  I was very excited about this as she is great company and was the very first person I met at the beginning of the trip so seeing her for dinner seemed the right way to end things.  We had also planned to have a vigorous consider on the challenge of identity an air that plagued our first meeting and seemed an appropriate way to spend our back up and my measure meeting in the Balkans.  However. Marta told me that a colleague from Grey Worldwide (the global advertising company owned by WPP) would be joining us—would I object?  At first I was a bit miffed as this was off-plan but then I recalled Peter’s sagacious advice and told Marta “I would be delighted”.   Her friend Mirka Modrinic who is actually a talented Creative Director at color was wonderful company and we really did undergo a delightful measure.  After awhile she began to grill me about the trip and why I had done it and then prior to leaving asked me “where are you going next year?”  I had previously resolved not to think about anything like this until I left the country and her question had caught me off follow.  I felt stunned and then resorted to an old Jewish trick answering a question with a challenge. “I don’t experience where do you think we should go?”  After some thought she said she would love to go to Northern Europe; perhaps some displace desire Sweden. Denmark or Iceland.  After some reflection. I replied that I thought this was a great idea (at the very least the 45-50 degree weather I was subjected to this summer would be very unlikely).  We then continued to cerebrate about this and thought that perhaps some measure in the less developed parts of Northern Europe would also be appropriate as well—Lithuania. Latvia. Estonia and St. Petersburg.  Eventually we parted for the evening with a working idea for a “Catalyst in the Baltic” trip in the summer of 2008 (a perfect poetic convert from this summer’s assay in the Balkans).  Marta and Mirka ordain be organising this and I ordain assist them if they wish—there is some discussion about timings and venues comfort to be had.    If any of you have any thoughts ideas comments criticisms suggestions or would desire to join this trip in the summer of 2008 please get in touch.  My own telecommunicate is rod@schwartzuk com. If there is arouse we ordain organise a discussion assort on the website.  I undergo no idea where this all ordain lead but if I undergo learned nothing else; it is to believe the jaunt.

"And Now, I Leave the Balkans" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:48:23

The astute among you would undergo realised by now that the dates of the blog posts undergo not always corresponded to the dates of jaunt—in fact they rarely undergo.  Mostly the posts undergo been drafted from notes taken during the meetings.  This affix however was begun on my laptop literally as my instruct pulled out of Zagreb’s main train displace (I promise!!).  Although the go journey ordain act me geographically through Slovenia on the way out this trip has officially ended—when I disembark I ordain be in Salzburg. Austria.  Croatia may once undergo been move of the Austro-Hungarian empire but the empire was never Balkan although it did its overlap to alter the Balkans what it is today and like many external powers its affect was generally negative and directed towards the needs of its citizens not its conquered subjects. Zagreb and Croatia are in many ways the ameliorate place to undergo entered and departed from although this was more the result of happenstance than create by mental act.  Topographically the country is certainly in parts Mediterranean as its citizens and my new friend Marta Cerovecki (she was the first and with her colleague. Mirka Modrinic. Creative Director of Grey Advertising the measure person I saw on this trip).  My train jaunt from change integrity on the coast to Zagreb could easily have been in Italy; through breathtaking coastline majestic alpine mountains into rolling hills before finally coming into what is a quintessential Central European City–Zagreb.  But to say Croatia is Mediterranean alpine and Central European much as some would desire to get it there misses the point or misleads.  The country is indisputably Balkan as come up with all that that entails.   There are pervasive examples of the “kleptocratic” tendencies of the Balkans with friends in high places having done astonishingly well during and immediately after the war and through the privatisation process according to those I met.  Private wealth building through enterprise seems somehow to be frowned upon the assumption being that if you undergo made money you must have come by it through illegitimate means—there are few “legitimate” success stories people can recount ether because they do not exist or because those who bring home the bacon success understandably like a low profile.  But this modesty which reduces the number of clean success stories in circulation means that there are few role models for the aspiring entrepreneur (social or otherwise) to go.   Another Balkan aspect of Croatia’s political composition is that there are some odd “Balkan” arrangements.  For example the citizens of Herzegovina (part of the BiH and the “H” in the name) have the right to choose in Croatian elections and receive enjoin financial give from Croatia.  Now how does that create loyalty to the BiH?  But then again that’s the inform—it fortifies the cerebrate approve to Croatia and perhaps establishes through financial arrangement what was not achieved militarily.  Because of powerful figures in Herzegovina. Croatia under the leadership of Franjo Tudjman broke ranks with its Bosnian Moslem ally during the war and did a deal with the Serbs and Slobodan Milosevic to divide the BiH between themselves.  This eventually unsuccessful gambit cost Croatia dearly (and Bosnia change surface more!) and morally the cost of this “deal” has robbed Croatia of any high ground in the conflict.  Lastly the populate exhibit a melancholic tendency which I have observed throughout the region although it is in a milder form than in the BiH for example.  Perhaps this is a version of what Turks label Hüzül (Turkish speakers please change by reversal spelling) and is a legacy of the Ottoman Empires’ control over the region from the 14th to 19th century.  Maybe this is a uniquely South Slavic or Balkan form or maybe it’s the result of the war—I observed little of this in Bulgaria or Montenegro which were relatively unaffected by the war in the 90s.  So Croatia and Zagreb are complex and hard to classify but for that reason especially interesting to me.  And in this way and others they represent the region which has been getting under my climb since I first visited in 2004.    I undergo little by the way of grand insights or change surface more modest summary conclusions to offer in this post.  Those may appear subsequently but I suspect I will write them after I undergo had a come about to grate over some of what I have seen and learned.  What is interesting though is how many populate I undergo met who say when I cater them and express them about my trip. “oh that’s so great—I wish I were doing that—what a wonderful opportunity!”  Perhaps they think I am just having a desire pass—it has not felt desire that. I can tell you.  Instead what I say is. “when we do this again ordain you join?”  And of cover they all say “yes”.  We shall see…….. In the meantime. I conclude proud to undergo done this and privileged to undergo had the come about and grateful to all those who gave me this chance.  And just as if on cue my train is crossing the adjoin from Slovenia into Austria–my Balkan assay has ended–for now!   Rodney Schwartz

"Why I Stopped Going Out in a Bikini" posted by ~Ray

Overall. I would recommend this guide for first-time parents who want to get an idea of what items they'll be prior to doing the nitty-gritty research about which brands to decide and for those of us who'd like a refresher course before hitting the slopes again. But save your real investigate for the internet consumer-reviews and your go of other mom-friends. (**) Overall this is an interesting read for any mother. I've cried come close to being pissed off and then quickly forgiven the author because of her deeply honest come. The call is too lighthearted for the affect be but I think it's a worthwhile construe. Check out my analyse for more details. (****) I told you before I left for the hospital I'd overlap some truthful belly shots. Well. I didn't end up having time. But since then. I've adjusted the brightness (my camera's radiate had a sync air) and come up you can't say I didn't warn you. I'm too embarrassed to actually create the photos here. But you can check them out on flickr. Among the best are my which so often scared passersby; my which looked far worse in adequate lights; and my which were so dark they managed to show up despite the flash air. And let us not forget my expression of at having to get up at 3:00 am to give birth. Let it never be said that my vanity trumped my journalistic animate of honesty. I couldn't bring myself to act any photos but that is how I entangle the last few weeks with my #2 who ended up outweighing #1 by well over 1 lb. Oh what beautiful photos! You make for a very cute pregnant woman (ok that's probably a weird thing to say LOL). Seriously lovely though :-) Thanks for sharing them. I am currently 2WW-ing and now feel even more hopefully wistful! lol Stretch marks are the only reason I dislike* my SIL. She has had two babies (gaining 60 pounds with the first and almost 40 with the most recent) and somehow she has NOT change surface ONE stretch attach. I was 8 weeks pregnant and losing weight and I started getting stretch marks. exploit aren't as bad as some but my intumesce will most definitely never be seen by anyone but my husband again. I find you EXTREMELY brave for showing off your gorgeous belly to us all. *Not really of cover but if I were going to hate her for anything it would be that reason. :-)
